Shift Worker-Member Journey

Shift Worker

Sleep and lifestyle improvement; a new pattern to improve mood and energy

In this example the focus is on Ashley, 43, a nurse who regularly does shift work. They want to improve their sleep and energy, with more of a strict focus on sleep requested.

Lifestyle Health Assessment

They choose to complete the assessment with a reduced focus just on sleep, energy and mood. This helps them and us understand the highest priority issues.

Basic Support Plan

They start on a Basic Support Plan, knowing that they are fairly determined but need some help in terms of how to achieve their goals with some basic support.

£47/month

Initial consultation

They decide to have an initial 30 minute one-to-one consultation with us. This enables a more in-depth discussion about their assessment, which allows us to understand their life better.

In this case, we discuss the nature of their shift work and context around their sleep and home setup (both their physical environment and their activities).

Focusing on sleep

With sleep, such as in this case, we look at a number of additional factors such as:

  • a person’s awake and sleep routines when working versus off work (particularly important with shift work),
  • their exercise,
  • physical environments (work and home),
  • food intake and timings,
  • digital device use,
  • caffeine intake,
  • medications or over the counter remedies used to help sleep,
  • other drugs that may interfere,
  • other stressors or worries, and
  • any other substance use.

Switching plans

They decide they want a more closely supported approach to make a bigger impact sooner, so switch from the basic to the Enhanced Support Plan for one to two months (reviewing at end of month one). Knowing they can go back down to the Basic Support Plan at any time.

£155/month

Further support

We work with them to further assess those home and work environments, how well setup they are for waking and sleep cycles.

For example, key factors in this case are not just the timings of work and eating patterns, but also the way their home life is set up; the lighting and also digital device habits in particular.

Further assessment

We follow up with a few weeks of logged assessment on sleep and surrounding factors such as food timings, and part of this is analysing their FitBit data shared with us.

In this case we’re here to help determine factors affecting their sleep, educate on factors which affect it sleep (via ‘shifts' we provide), and help them make positive changes.

Crucially, we support them to devise, test and then adjust a routine which promotes better sleep, energy and mood.

This is proposed and started, with us able to help determine and log changes and improvements.

Unexpected benefits

During the process of improvement, they become interested in the benefits (some unexpected) that they’re getting from this change, for example: making increasingly better nutrition choices, more sense of energy and better moods.

The nutrition choices aspect leads them to want to understand more about metabolic health and optimising their life further to get additional benefits.

Changing focus

They continue past the initial months, but then move back onto the Basic Support Plan, to now focus on food, gut health and exercise.

Ongoing progress

Like with others, using just the Basic Support Plan they continue to develop their understanding of what healthy diet and life choices are for them, in their situation, and how to practically apply them gradually. They learn how to change tastes and habits slowly over time, so as not to feel ‘restricted’, and can progress through this journey.
