Busy Family-Overhaul

Busy Family

Lifestyle Health Overhaul; including adults and kids

In this example the focus is on the Kerries, a family with young kids where diet, a seeming lack of control over life, and severely limited time, means increased stress and less than ideal food and life choices.

The Reality

The reality is both parents having busy careers with a busy work schedule, struggling to fit life into the time available, with seemingly no headspace to make changes.

Post work, they try to compress a lot into each evening: doing a separate dinner for the kids, then dealing with kids’ bedtimes, ending up themselves eating late into the evening and then just going to bed.

They don’t have appreciable time to research how to eat better, or to create change in their situation.

Also, one priority is wanting the kids to eat better, as well as prioritising their kids more.

Lifestyle Health Assessments

The family take a couple of lifestyle health assessments with us.

The first covers both parents as their choices and habits were similar enough, only splitting out the stress and sleep aspects for each parent.

The second, which we carry out face to face with them as a couple, enables understanding of what they’re doing with their kids in terms of diet, sleep and other choices.

They start with the Family Support Plan.

However, they want to start off with an ad-hoc consultation with us, to talk through the situation in more depth (from assessment results) and discover where there could be opportunities for intervention.

Plan, and testing

From the combined engagement we get a better picture of the situation and devise a proposed plan of action, with them. This, based on their situation, is targeted where there are opportunities to make things better sooner. But, has to be compatible with what the family will be able to manage.

In this case no additional testing or personalised analysis of food responses are carried out at this stage.

Mainly, because of stress levels and meal timings meaning the information would be hard to untangle at that time.

Initial Programme

The main priority and focus is to help with shifting the family onto a more compatible eating, sleeping, exercise, and thus overall happiness and joy, schedule!

In this case, they want to continue with a more closely supported approach and so they have ad-hoc support meetings with us every few weeks. And, we provide assessments at four to six week periods (with adjustment possible as we go).

Following a period of three months, we'll then review, and discuss in more detail whether any additional assessments or adjustments are worthwhile.

Children Progress

In this case they use our support to change most around the theme of their eating timings, food diversity, quality and sleep.

They are able to make significant progress with their kids' diets, taking the small shifts approach, which enables kids to not notice any significant changes, as they are more subtly weaved in over time, and so enabling gradual success.

The kids become less ‘hangry’ and it supports them being emotionally more resilient and stable.

Adults progress

Whilst the work situation remains busy for the parents, the shifts toward their goal allow changes in sleep quality, and nutrition choices.

They’re able to feel more in control of their situation, less tired, with better moods and with significantly more energy to now make other changes in their life.

In particular, the time they then spend with their kids is spent with their minds fully ‘present’ and enjoying that time, rather than their previous stressed and distracted selves.

Continuing the journey

Whilst they've made the initial changes, they continue with us on the Family Support Plan to now focus on further changes.

Remaining focus areas

They focus on understanding their individualised food responses, over the course of four weeks, so they can optimise their family meals.

They also focus on changing their family digital habits and the healthiness of the home environment around them.

Changes have been significant for them and they’re in a better health and life position, having used enhanced support just at the start to enable them to make that starting significant change, where they had no time or capacity to do so before.
